Racial & Ethnic Minority Acceleration Consortium for Health Equity (REACH) Training Supplement
Background
FDA OMHHE Health Equity Innovation Award: Racial & Ethnic Minority Acceleration Consortium for Health Equity (REACH) consortium strengthens and advances minority health and health equity focused research, outreach, and communications as well as support training and mentoring of diverse students, fellows, and/or researchers.
Proposed activity
Building on existing work, the proposed activity will be to continue to support training and mentoring of diverse students, fellows, and/or researchers to continue to amplify and advance collaborative activities with funded REACH organizations on the following activities:
(1) EQUITY of voices
REACH supports research projects that enhance EQUITY of voices by: amplifying FDA’s communication with groups and organizations to ensure diverse communities are informed about FDA’s efforts; increasing understanding of racial and ethnic minority patient perspectives, preferences, and unmet needs; and advancing FDA engagement with racial and ethnic minority communities.
Example areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Support training and mentoring of diverse students, fellows, and/or researchers.
(2) EQUITABLE data efforts
REACH supports research projects that enhance EQUITABLE data efforts by increasing data available on diverse groups including, but not limited to, ethnicity, race, age, disability, and geography.
Examples areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Increasing training and mentoring for diverse students, fellows, investigators, and researchers.
(3) EQUITY in clinical trials
REACH supports research projects that advance EQUITY in clinical trials by supporting efforts to increase the participation of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority populations in clinical trials.
Examples of EQUITY in clinical trials research areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Increasing training and mentoring for diverse clinical trial/study investigators, fellows and other researchers.
Outputs
The OMHHE REACH Training Program supports the research and training goals and prepares trainee from diverse backgrounds at an early stage of their research career. The trainee will be mentored by and collaborate with both public health FDA scientists and REACH Principal Investigators and participate in research activities, including supporting REACH-related research projects for up to one year. The trainee has the option to work remotely. Trainee must agree to submit supporting documentation to show proof of current student enrollment status, to be provided by FDA OMHHE.
Timeline and funding
University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) requests $100,000 to complete the additional outputs within the current scope of work.
Timeline (12 months):
Months 1-2: Identify trainee and develop study materials
Months 3-9: Trainee support study to include but not limited to key informant interviews and survey development
Months 9-12: Analyze data and disseminate results
