Options for conducting research with the Mass Spectrometry Center at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy are outlined below.

All work within the Center requires all users have appropriate training, obtain and maintain an iLab account, and log all activities via their iLab account. Refer to the following link to establish an iLab account: https://cibr.umaryland.edu/account/login.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborative work will include collaboration with a Center member and involve salary support of Center staff and faculty/students by either the Center member or collaborator. Collaborative work includes:
    • Current funded work that supports staff FTE appropriate to the scope of work.
    • Preliminary data generation towards the submission of collaborative grants that will include salary support for Center faculty, staff, and students, as well as appropriate resources towards Center resources as dictated by the scope of work.
  • Research is eligible for member subsidy when it includes collaboration with a Mass Spectrometry Center member.
  • Co-authorship on manuscripts and presentation of data is expected for collaborative work.

Self-Service:

  • Non-member personnel can be trained to use some Center instruments in order to conduct their own experiments.
  • Self-service is billed hourly according to the rate schedule determined for each specific workflow and instrument.
  • Currently, self-service instruments include: Bruker Amazon, Bruker Ultraflex, and Waters UPLC-TQD.

Fee-for-Service (FFS):

  • The cost of a fee-for-service (FFS) sample analysis includes the cost of supplies for the experiment, instrument time and maintenance, and salary for Center personnel who conduct the experiment.
  • No subsidy will be given for FFS work.
  • For complicated requests that involve significant faculty support of FFS work above/beyond conducting the experiment, an additional consultation fee may be incurred.

Preliminary Data Generation/Unfunded Research:

Some funds may be available for support of unfunded research. Announcements of these opportunities will be posted on the MS Center website, when available. Generally, pilot data:

  • Must be toward the development of future funding
  • Must provide a statement of the scope of work, an estimate of the cost, and the purpose of the work (i.e., specific grant in which data will be included and anticipated percentage of effort of faculty/staff as well as instrument use that will be budgeted, publication of work, etc.).
